I curated an event called From Employee to Entrepreneur: the masterclass series to help you create your roadmap to become your own boss. At the time of this writing, covid is still in full effect. So many people I know are deciding to pivot and start their own business. This time has forced us to pause and take a look at life, for those willing to look. It’s one reason I put this event together. I wanted to bring experts together who could share their journey to entrepreneurship and offer advice and insight to help new entrepreneurs make the transition maybe a little easier.
My guests included award-winning podcaster Jordan Harbinger, authors Jennifer Lee and Dr. Tasha Eurich, creative pioneer Marshall “the tin man” Seese, Jr., neuroscientist Shonte Jovan Taylor, pivot queen Kelly Abanda, CEOs Jennifer Flaa, Brian Bogert, Brenda Batista, Ashley Reale, and Meredith Viguers, Chief Visionary Officer MaryBeth Hyland, I/O Psychologists Drs. Abraham Gutsioglu and Sohee Jun, Bioenergetics Psychotherapist Leah Benson, Master Certified Hypnotherapist Michal T. Margolese, Breathwork Healer and Organization Specialist Lili Pettit, Transformational Coaches Tallia Deljou and Gems Collins, Executive Coaches Liz Applegate, Carrie Sechel, Manuel Astruc, and Matt Korban, Diversity Pioneers Fred Miller and Judith Katz, Financial Executives Sharon Zafrani and Jude Wilson, Branding Experts Peggy MacSweeney and Raluca Topor, Business Strategist Michelle DeNio, Founder of Your Dinner Is Planned, Jasmine Shea, and of course me!
We covered topics like leadership, mindset, teams/culture, sales and marketing, finances, social media/branding, and process/systems. Some interview highlights were learning a 3-step process to help you pivot; identifying the 4 creative blocks to your success; the power of bioenergetics, hypnotherapy, and why every entrepreneur needs to know about it; how to create meaning connections in a world that spams non-stop; and what it really takes to start your own business.
This experience pushed me outside my comfort zone. I reached out to people I didn’t know; I wasn’t sure how I was going to get 30 speakers together. I had to outsource specific parts of this events because I knew I wasn’t the expert nor did I have time to learn nor did I really want to learn. Let me be real…It took a lot of time and energy to put together and it was also fun, when I allowed it to be fun! Can you relate?
Some of my big takeaways:
– The road to entrepreneurship is really a mindset game. It’s probably going to be the biggest self-development journey one can undertake.
– Don’t try to do everything yourself. You will burn out.
– 3 things you need to do daily to grow your business.
– Invest in yourself. Work with a mentor or coach to cut down the ramp time.
– Prepare yourself financially for the day you decide to leave your cushy day job. Save enough money to cover 6 to 18 months of your bills.
– Surround yourself with the right people. Don’t let others drag you down.
